Stephen King and Frank Darabont-”THE MIST” Trailer

Posted in Movie Previews, News by Popcorn Ninja on the August 31st, 2007

The MistIn the past the combination of Stephen King and Frank Darabont have provided some excellent movies - The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Now the trailer has been released for another King based novel, The Mist, about a town that is trapped by a mist that brings creatures. I’ve like what Darabont has done in the past with King’s material. I guess we’ll have to wait until November 21st to see how this one turns out. The movie’s cast includes Thomas Jane (The Punisher), Marcia Gay Harden (The Hoax), and Andre Braugher (Poseidon).

Cast: Ryan Gosling, Anthony Hopkins, David Strathairn

Director: Gregory Hoblit

Above average thriller with great performances from Ryan Gosling and Anthony Hopkins. This movie is about an up-and-coming lawyer, Willy Beachum (Gosling), that is handed a case right before making a big career change. Beachum goes in thinking it will be a quick case but is surprised by the defendant, Crawford (Hopkins), choice to plead not guilty. The movie continues with Beachum and Crawford trying to out smart each other. This movie has a couple good surprises up it’s sleeve and Hopkins does a great job of being the villain.

The Good, The Bad, and The Remakes

Posted in Movie Lists, Random Posts by Popcorn Ninja on the August 28th, 2007

psycho_dvd.jpg

It has always been popular to remake older films in Hollywood. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. In the last few years (especially in the Horror genre) it feels like there are more and more remakes coming out. Just last weekend I caught the remake of Psycho, and how disappointing that was. They take the material from a well made movie and then just make a mockery of it. On a the positive side there are movies that seem to either take older films that are not effective or that were very bad movies that make sense to remake. I just hope that filmmakers will do their best to try and make good remakes, not just the low quality types of remakes. Anyways I’ve included a few movies below that I think were quality remakes, and the not-so quality remakes.

The Good

  • Hamlet (1996)
  • The Italian Job (2003)
  • King Kong (2005)
  • Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
  • The Thing (1982)

The Bad

  • Godzilla (1998)
  • House of Wax (2005)
  • Planet of the Apes (2001)
  • Psycho (1998)
  • When A Stranger Calls (2006)

And if you have watched some of the terrible remakes of recent, be sure to check the original version out there because a lot of the time they are much better. Of course these are just some examples of some of the remakes. If you’d like to add to my list be sure to leave a comment.

3:10 TO YUMA Preview (Russell Crowe, Christian Bale)

Posted in Movie Previews, News by Popcorn Ninja on the August 27th, 2007

310-to-yuma.jpg

I’m a huge fan of western movies and the new one starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe is looking to be good. This is a remake of the 1957 film with the same title. The plot is Bale escorting Crowe to the train station so that he can make it to the court in Yuma. The trailer is getting me excited as well are the reviews that are starting to come out from some of the big names (Hollywood Reporter, Variety, etc.). The release date is Sept. 7th.

DVD Recommendations….DISTURBIA

Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Sarah Roemer, Carrie-Anne Moss

Director: DJ Caruso

This revamped teen version of Rear Window is a very well made thriller. It starts out with a surprising scene then continues to show it’s main character, Kale (LaBeouf), spiral downwards and land himself in 3 months of house arrest. Kale spends his time watching the girl next door and one of this neighbors. The end of the movie is a bit over the top, but it is all saved by the strong performance from Shia LaBeouf. He seems to fit and play his roles very well and is currently one of todays best young actors. This movie provides more then enough laughs and thrills and for that I recommend it.

Rated PG-13 on appeal for sequences of terror and violence, and some sensuality.
