THE KINGDOM Movie Review

Cast: Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper
Director: Peter Berg
The newest movie from Peter Berg, the director of Friday Night Lights and The Rundown, gives us an effective and entertaining action flick.
The movie starts out with a shocking and intense intro involving an attack on Americans. This leads to a team of FBI agents going over to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to find out who was behind this vicious attack. The movie slows down in the middle but still keeps the intensity building up until the explosive finale.
If you go in thinking this movie is going to make some big political point about terrorism or the War in Iraq, you will be greatly disappointed. Berg is good and what he does and that is making an entertaining action movie. There are some attempts at making some “deeper” meaning but in the end it is just a good straight forward action film. Warning, Berg does use “shakey cam” filming throughout the movie so I advise sitting further back in the theater. The cast does a good job at keeping us involved in their characters.
So if you are looking for a smart and intense action film I recommend this one.

VACANCY Movie Review

Cast: Luke Wilson, Kate Beckinsale, Frank Whaley
Director: Nimrod Antal
While driving late at night, a married couple (Wilson and Beckinsale) end up getting lost on some back roads. Eventually there is some car trouble and the couple ends up at a rundown motel. After getting to their room they come across a VHS tape that shows a murder taking place in the same room that they are stuck in.
I will say that it was a surprise to see an actual horror/suspense movie that didn’t have to resort to graphic violence to try and creep out the audience. It plays out like a cat-and-mouse game between the couple and the killers that are terrorizing them. There are quite a few good scenes that build a lot of suspense and it is a step above the latest horror movies. The movie starts out good with some well done credits that made me feel like I was watching an old Hitchcock movie, but seems to lose some steam towards the last fifteen minute mark.
