Will Smith in I AM LEGEND Trailer #2 Online

Posted in Movie Trailers, News by Popcorn Ninja on the October 24th, 2007

i-am-legend.jpg

IGN has the second trailer for the new I AM LEGEND starring Will Smith. It follows the last man on earth after a terrible virus takes out everyone, but he ends up not alone. They’ve tried this story with other movies such as Omega Man and here is another shot at it. It is directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine). It will be released on December 14, 2007. Some of the CGI from the trailer is questionable but you never know it hasn’t been released so we’ll just have to wait and see.

GONE BABY GONE Movie Review

Cast: Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman

Director: Ben Affleck

From the book written by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River) comes a deep and compelling look at lives of people in Boston. The story begins with a child being taken away from her family. The child’s mother is heavy into drinking and drugs. The cops don’t have any significant leads, so the family turns to a private investigator named Patrick (Affleck) and his girlfriend/partner (Monaghan).

This film is very similar to Mystic River, this movie has everyday people, cops, and crooks stuck in hard situations. There are a lot of similarities but don’t let that fool you. I liked Mystic River but I felt like this was superior to even it. The best thing about this movie is the realism of it and the idea that life isn’t filled with black and white decisions all the time. Everyday we wake up having to make decisions that could be wrong or right depending on how you view it. After leaving the theater this film will have you pondering the question “What would you do?”

The cast is at the top of their game. Casey Affleck does a great job with the lead character role. The majority of supporting cast (especially Ed Harris) could be included for Oscars at this point. Ben Affleck does a great job at portraying the city and it’s surroundings, and for a theatrical directing debut I was very impressed.

This is one of the more smart and intense movies you will see this year and I definitely recommend it.

TRANSFORMERS Movie Review

Cast: Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel

Director: Michael Bay

The live action version of the classic 80’s cartoon is about to hit the shelves this week so I thought I’d give my opinion on this one. This was a strange movie to me, because I hated some of the elements of this movie but loved others.

The plot is about alien robots that have come to earth looking for their ultimate source of power. The only person that has the map for this is Sam (Labeouf). The movie sets up a battle between the Autobots (good) and the Decepticons (evil). The robots and their transformation is wonderfully done. I enjoyed most of the scenes with any of the robot characters on the screen.

The cast varies from good to bad. Shia does a great job, as he always does. The one part of the movie that I thought they could cut out completely was the group of hackers. These characters were way too over the top and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes whenever they opened their mouths.

Overall Bay does an excellent job with the film and it’s intense action sequences. I definitely have to recommend this film for that reason even if some of the characters and the script falls short at times.

Where Are All The Great Horror Movies?

Posted in Movie Lists, DVD Recommendations, Random Posts by Popcorn Ninja on the October 9th, 2007

night-of-the-living-dead.jpg

Since Halloween is coming up soon I’m definitely in the mood for some scary movies. I’ve always enjoyed watching suspenseful and terrifying movies. This leads me to my question….where are all the genuine horror movies?

Lately it seems like there is a horror movie coming out every weekend, in my opinion, most of them are not that good. I think the problem is that they have turned from eerie environments, great music, and intelligent editing, to gore/torture. I’m not sure why gore and torture are featured in majority of the franchises of late (Saw, Hostel, Hills Have Eyes), Do we really enjoy watching torture and gratuitous violence? It doesn’t scare me, it’s more like how gross can they get. These movies have some good things about them but it seems to be taken away from the over done elements that I’m talking about.

Obviously violence has always played some part in horror movies, but to watch 5-10 minutes straight of someone getting picked apart seems like overkill (no pun intended) and flat out sick. I miss the days of genuine scares, movies like Psycho, Halloween, and Poltergeist (to name a few).

Now I’m sure many will disagree with me and these types of movies seem to be doing very well in the theaters, but this is just my opinion and plea to bring back some good old school horror movies.

P.S. Here are some horror movies I suggest for Halloween if you haven’t had a chance to see them. (This of course is just a small portion of the good horror movies out there)

Is There Going to be a HALO Movie?

Posted in News by Popcorn Ninja on the October 8th, 2007

halo3.jpg

Well an article from Rotten Tomatoes says that the planned director is saying that there will not be one.

Read full article - Click here.

Fans of the Halo series have been wondering if the production studios will ever get around to making a movie based on the game. It started out to be a production from both 20th Century and Universal but that ended. There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the production of this movie and you never know what might happen in the future.

For now the fans will have to stick to playing the newly released Halo 3 (Xbox 360).

Upcoming Movie Trailers - THE BUCKET LIST, GRACE IS GONE

Posted in Movie Previews, News by Popcorn Ninja on the October 8th, 2007

graceisgone.jpg Here are a couple new movie trailers that caught my attention.

The first is a drama starring John Cusack called Grace Is Gone. It is about a father that struggles to tell his two daughters about the loss of their mother who has been in Iraq. I know it’s just a trailer but this looks like it could be some of Cusack’s best work, I’m definitely looking forward to checking this one out.

Release Date: December 7, 2007

The next one is a comedy/drama starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman called The Bucket List. This one will be directed by Rob Reiner. The plot follows two men that must share a hospital room. While being together they discover adventures of life before they “kick the bucket”. I enjoy both of these actors in whatever they do, so I’m excited to see how this turns out.

Release Date: December 25, 2007
