Where Are All The Great Horror Movies?
Since Halloween is coming up soon I’m definitely in the mood for some scary movies. I’ve always enjoyed watching suspenseful and terrifying movies. This leads me to my question….where are all the genuine horror movies?
Lately it seems like there is a horror movie coming out every weekend, in my opinion, most of them are not that good. I think the problem is that they have turned from eerie environments, great music, and intelligent editing, to gore/torture. I’m not sure why gore and torture are featured in majority of the franchises of late (Saw, Hostel, Hills Have Eyes), Do we really enjoy watching torture and gratuitous violence? It doesn’t scare me, it’s more like how gross can they get. These movies have some good things about them but it seems to be taken away from the over done elements that I’m talking about.
Obviously violence has always played some part in horror movies, but to watch 5-10 minutes straight of someone getting picked apart seems like overkill (no pun intended) and flat out sick. I miss the days of genuine scares, movies like Psycho, Halloween, and Poltergeist (to name a few).
Now I’m sure many will disagree with me and these types of movies seem to be doing very well in the theaters, but this is just my opinion and plea to bring back some good old school horror movies.
Popcorn Ninja
P.S. Here are some horror movies I suggest for Halloween if you haven’t had a chance to see them. (This of course is just a small portion of the good horror movies out there)

Actually I thought 2006 was a very good year for the low budget, indie horror flick. Evidenced by very good movies like Feast and Altered.

I would agree that there have been quite a few good horror movies to come out in the last few years….it just seems that the trend that I was talking about (ie excessive gore/torture) is becoming more popular.

Looks like old horror movies are still on top.

I prefer the psychological suspense. The blood and the weird creatures don’t scare me at all.

Although we do enjoy the Saw series, i agree with you for the most part. Movies just aren’t what they used to be in the horror department. The original Halloween was scary as hell as a kid, gave me the feeling that Michael Myers was in my front yard standing behind a tree watching me. Classic stuff.

I probably wouldn’t have Six Sense or Gremlins in a horror movie list but I am a big fan of the genre.
My first experiences come from Jason in Friday the 13th. Not much as changed really - it’s still a game of trying to decide which one or two characters will make it to the end and finding different ways to kill people in between.
Films like Hostel have maybe gone to far. The true frights come from what might happen next, not graphic gore.
My favourite all time horror series - Evil Dead.
Gotta love the mix of suspense, humour and gore !

Old horror movies are always better thought out than their modern relatives.
Hostel is split into two parts. The first half of the film just sees the director get as many naked women in as possible. The second half as much blood and gore as possible.
Personally I like 6th sense and the original Saw. Both good films. Also the original zombie films. Classics.

I must say within last few years i have seen an improvement in horror movies. I personally liked The sixth sense and Signs. They are quite different from the regular horror types.

I totally agree that watching people inflict pain on others isn’t really what I’m looking for in a good horror movie. I wonder when some of those great old movies will start to get remade… it’s tough to watch movies like Poltergeist these days without laughing at the special effects they use.

i love the list you’ve created. with the exception of a few, they are mostly suspense rather than gore. i still think it’s the “book” mentality. whenever we’re forced to call upon our imagination, we come up with something better than what we’re watching.
