NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN Review

Posted in Movie Reviews by Popcorn Ninja on the February 4th, 2008

Cast: Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem

Directors: Ethan and Joel Coen

One of the most acclaimed movies of this past year has been nominated for various awards. The first time I saw a preview for this movie, my reaction was “This will be amazing”. The Coen Brothers have made some very interesting movies over the last few years. The movie follows three main characters with their own way of going about things. The majority of the cast does an amazing job.

I know that what I say in the following sentences may bring some harsh views from others but I do think the movie takes a fast turn for the worst around 3/4 through the movie. Up until that point I’d say this movie is excellent and deserved to Win Best Picture, but I think the movie takes a turn for the worse. I don’t want to go into all the details and ruin anything but I felt that many of the choices of how the scenes are done and pacing of the ending is near bad. I think you need to have a good ending to make a great movie and did not like the ending, that said the rest of the movie is near perfect. So you be the judge, this is definitely one to watch and to talk about.

Rated R for strong graphic violence and some language.

Thank you for the review. I have been a fan of the Coen brothers ever since I saw “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”. This one is a must see for me too, though I might be a bit more skeptical thanks to you.

I hope you continue too. Of course, I could spend a year just reading everything you have already posted. But my votes for “keep blogging”.

I enjoyed this movie more that I thought I would. I cannot say I’m a Coen Bros fan although I do like some of their movies.

    I was pleasantly surprised.

Nice review, Coen brothers always make a good job and this one isn’t an exeption, I liked it a lot.

Javier was the best actor in this movie, also this movie is one of the best of this year!

Great to see Javier Bardem winning a BAFTA, although he didn’t look half as menacing in real life.

What a cracking character. Gotta get myself one of those gas propelled “guns”.

My only criticsm would be that things lost direction (or I wasn’t concentrating)) with Tommy Lee Jones’ character. He went off to see some old fella but I have no idea why !

Overall though, 9 out of 10 from me.

Great review…I need to go check this one out!

Haven’t seen it, yet. Thanks for the review. Certainly on my agenda to watch now, though. I, too, am a huge Coen Brothers Fan. The Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona are hugely entertaining. Thanks again Popcorn Ninja; you ROCK!

Thanks for the info. All of us have different opinion depending on our preferences.

  14. on February 18th, 2008 at 4:21 am

To be honest, Coens rather spoiled the ending of O, Brother Where Art Thou? as well((
But I did not get this one yet. Hope that our tastes differ and my faith in Coens will be renewed)))

I have the time to see it these days. I think it’s a nice movie, but don’t have the same atraction like other movies, and the subject is already used.

I had heard that this was supposed to be a return to form for the Coen brothers but I was dissapointed. Strange ending too.

Mihai, how do you figure that it is a “nice” movie? Good yes, nice, not really.

  19. on March 4th, 2008 at 2:52 am

I didn’t like this movie at all. Just goes to show what I know after it won an Academy Award.

  20. on March 4th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Love the Coen brothers, will definitely watch this one too. i’m curious about the weird ending as well now…

The ending wasn’t what you’d expect, but someone had spoiled the ending for me before I went to go see it. I also got stuck sitting in the front row for this movie. The movie was great, but I will never sit in the front row again!

  22. on March 16th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

I’ve been meaning to check this out. Two of my friends have seen it and they loved it - “film of the year” apparently!

Thought this was a brilliant movie, plenty of action and suspense, and not your averate hollywood movie. Nice change.

I’m a big fan of the Coen Brothers and really waited for this film. It’s even better then i expected! Coens are always Coens. This film deserves all these awards it already got and even more.
Tommy Lee Jones is a great actor and as always he is amazing.

  29. on May 1st, 2008 at 3:39 am

Few days ago I watched this move and I like it very much, because of Tommy Lee Jones, he is really good. Yes, the end of the film was not as good as I expected. But if you will think from the other end you will understand that bad film can not be nominated for 8 Oscars. Also it get 69 wins & 31 nominations. I have read all those notes and as I see that here are a lot of different opinions about this film and it means only one think as many people and many opinions.

This movie was an over-hyped stinker and it’s a shame that Tommy Lee Jones associated himself with it. It went nowhere and ended nowhere.

The Hollywood types sold this to us with all the hoopla they could muster and it worked.

Maybe this will become one of those “stinker cult classics” like “Plan B from Outer Space”.

Tommy Lee is a good actor on this movie. A must see.

No Country for Old Men is unique I must say =/ But being all in olden settings and the plot is so simple I don’t think it’s a must watch movie =/

I thought the film was a bit slow to be honest, but I was always engaged with the film. certainly unique

  35. on June 11th, 2008 at 5:57 am

Normally I am not a big fan of the Coen brothers, but nevertheless, I took my chance and saw this movie without knowing anything about it - And it really worked for me. If it was the “inyourface” violence and very cool spanish actor I don’t know, but it crawled under my skin. A little minus thow, is the end - suddenly it´s just there….

  36. acne said,

Well for me in the rate of 10 i’ll give it 6. The plot are good but it is kind of slow for me. Anyway thumbs up for Tommy!

I fell asleep at the end :o

  42. on July 15th, 2008 at 2:08 am

I didnt get the movie either.

Only interesting part was when he flipped the coin and asked him to choose… heads or tails. Scary!

  43. on July 21st, 2008 at 6:27 pm

I love the Cohen brothers, they are pure genius. My favourite will always be the Big Lebowski though!

Not bad - i think it was hyped too much. The new movie by the Farelly’s w/Clooney and Pitt should be good.

  47. Jason B. said,

Great movie. I highly recommend everyone see this movie. I totally disagree wth FTA Forums on this one. The movie was hyped a lot for a good reason. That reason being that its a good movie. But everyone has there own opinion.

  48. on September 26th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

This was a great movie, without having a recognized main character it was a brilliant movie, i thought Tommy Lee Jones did a superb job along with his crew. This movie is in the same category for me as Boondock Saints and Heat!

  49. on October 1st, 2008 at 11:25 am

I thought this was a pretty darn good movie. The acting was perfect for the type of move it was. The cast was also perfect. I was entertained the entire movie. The only hold back is the ending isnt perfect. Just alright…

  50. on October 6th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I have loved all the other cohen brother movies i have seen. But i don’t like this one. Everyone i know seem to love it, including the critics. I can’t figure out why, but it does not do anything for me.

  51. Acne said,

Excellent movie. Javier Bardem shows his true acting colors and although Josh Brolin was a bit under the radar, the suddenness of his character and real persona behind is marvelous — he really gave Llewelyn Moss a soft life and takes on the macho side of it and twists its arm without any difficulty. These two deserved the credit they got on this film.

I don´t really see this movie as a “movie”. It´s beautifully made, really artistic, but the story? Come on… And the characters…. What is the point of making a movie with characters that doesn´t change at all?
