Movie Review VANTAGE POINT

Posted in Movie Reviews by Popcorn Ninja on the February 23rd, 2008

twohalfstars1.jpg

Cast: Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Sigourney Weaver

Director: Pete Travis

This film has been advertised for what seems to be the longest period of time ever. I feel like I’ve watched trailers for this for over a full year, maybe not. Anyways the All Star casted film opened tonight. At a glance it has everything you would want in a movie - great cast, interesting idea, car chases, etc. After viewing the film I was disappointed.

The idea and concept of having several views of an assassination is great. Several parties are involved in an assassination of the United States President in Spain, seeing both the terrorists and those trying to stop them. The movie starts off good and I was very into it for the effective opening 15 minutes, but the more the movie goes along the more the plot thickens too much. It seems like twists were added just to add them when they didn’t seem to pan out very well in the end. Aside from the plot going South, the action is done well. We get some intense chase scenes but even those seem to get to be too much.

So my recommendation is to wait for this over hyped movie to hit the DVD shelves because you’ll probably like it more spending only a few dollars vs the box office prices.

I wanted to see this movie but when i saw the previews it kind of reminded me of another movie…Just cant think of which one right now…I think ill take your advice though and wait for this to hit DVDs instead of blowing money at the movies for me and my gf.

  2. on February 24th, 2008 at 10:48 am

Sounds like the movie version of the grassy knoll. At least, if they had cinematic control over it. Also sounds like Hero or Rashomon.

  3. on February 25th, 2008 at 4:21 am

I really wanted to see this movie but with your rating its not looking great. I will still see it when it is released but am not as hyped after your review.

I was sceptical over this release. Looks like it will be either great or real bad. Will probably give this one a miss as there are others I still want to see such as There will be Blood and Jumper.

  5. on February 26th, 2008 at 5:35 am

Well.. I wanted to see it in the cinema, but everybody’s givin’ up the idea after your review. What I am to do? I guess flipping a coin is an idea!
    Heads - I go.
Tails - wait for DVD release.

    And..

    ..it is..

    tails)))

I cant blame you for seeing the trailer for so long. It might have its over “ad decayed”.

Not one to see at the cinema by all accounts then?

I miss the old Sigourney Weaver. She was great in the old Alien movie.

  12. on March 3rd, 2008 at 2:28 am

The more trailers I see the more I want to see this movie. Just hope it isn’t as bad as I keep hearing.

I live in Spain so it adds a bit more excitement trying to work out what they are actually saying.

This movie was fantastic! I like it even more in retrospect, hard to explain. Dennis Quaid was awesome…although I would have loved me a little more Sigourney!!!

I considered going to see this movie at the theater, but decided it would probably be very similar to a JFK show I saw on TV a couple months ago. I’ll wait and rent it.

I’m going to go see vantage point because of matthew fox. I’m no homosexual but hey he’s in lost and I’m a lost fan. Now if only evangeline lilly gets casted in a movie =(

I also enjoyed watching this movie in theater. But the thing is… TERRORISTS always screw up! I like Dennis Quaid as he showed his good acting skills just like those movies “The Day After Tomorrow” and “in Good Company”.

Finally saw this last night, its was OK but nothing special. Some good twists and turns but not the greatest movie in the world.

  33. on April 1st, 2008 at 8:13 am

I’ve also seen this now and thought it was a great movie. Plenty of suspense and a great ending. Would like to see more action movies like this made.

I agree. Although i have doubts that it should be censored for a certain group of age because it is quite bloody.

I watched it yesterday, pretty good movies. But the ending was not good. It was too easy though. Kill all of them and saved the president too easy.

  44. on April 30th, 2008 at 4:35 am

I will go to the cinema for sure, I love films with Dennis Quaid. Each time new film appear I am going to the cinema to watch film there. To my mind this is more interesting, also the sound effects and just a first impression in the cinema is much stronger then at home. I think that the best Quaid’s film is The Day After Tomorrow.

It started okay with the different points of views. But doing it too much made it too boring. =/ They’re just trying to drag the show by showing different perspective and delaying the show. Sigh.

I have to agree with zo hai. I watched the first half and slept until the credits. My wife did not enjoy it either :(

  49. on May 27th, 2008 at 12:39 am

If you enjoy watching the first fifteen minutes of this movie, then you’ll enjoy the reeming you’ll get when you see the first fifteen over and over again. Save a buck and watch something else.

#25 Matthew Fox plays the nicest role in the wholle movie. All the rest of actors think it’s their movie and they’ll win an oscar or whatever. Fox is in his place, the only one not over.

We say: Harrison Ford is getting older. Matthew Fox is the nicest one to start playing Ford’s roles!

this is definetly a candidate for movie of the year, theres not one point where I drifted away from the film, not a poor scene at all. The way it tells the story and builds it through different characters perspectives is superb

This movie seemed like something good and fresh at first, but after a while it looked as though they had no real idea for the movie. Acting was good, other than that - this movie blows. In my personal ranking - 4/10 and that’s only thanks to the acting.

I haven’t heard much about this movie. And yeah I love assassination stories and action movies. But I agree, that it is so disappointing when a movie started so good but as you reach the middle part, there is a feeling that you want the movie to end, plus the fact that you were so excited when you first saw the trailer, you where thinking it would be a great movie, and not to forget the great cast and all that only to realize it’s not, very disappointing. yeah right, just wait for the release of the DVD copy than watching in with its box-office price, it is less cheaper and you can fast forward or just stop and continue whenever you like.

    -John Simon

  84. on September 26th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

Just had the chance to check this movie out. I was very happy with it. Its your typical assassination story with a good twist. If you haven’t had a chance to check this one out I think you will like it.

  85. on September 26th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

not one of the best movies ive seen, for such a good plot i didnt see the acting take place in the same light. It was mediocore at best and the review is right on. It kind of dragged on and the few exciting scenes it had didnt last very long.

  86. on September 27th, 2008 at 2:31 am

I didn’t like the movie that much. The ending was very disappointing.

  87. on September 30th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

This movie just felt so contrived. It was a waste of the considerable talent of the actors in it if you ask me. All the ‘twists’ felt very forced and the whole thing didn’t stimulate any emotional involvement

  88. Howard said,

I totally agree with the Popcorn Ninja. This is a movie you can wait to see on dvd or online. It is decent but not worth the ticket price these days.

  89. on October 6th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

  91. on November 26th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

I like the movie because the second part of the movie was filmed here in my city, Cuernavaca Morelos. Yes, beleive it or not, they don’t spend lot of money in the real cities, but look places more appropiate to their budgets.

i think this could have been a really good movie if the storyline had been a bit simpler. the premise was clever, but the screenwriters must have felt that it needed to be more complicated.
