Blu-Ray Finds It’s Way Home

Posted in Blu-Ray Stuff, Random Posts by Popcorn Ninja on the March 17th, 2008

Blu-Ray finds it’s way home….well that is my home. I finally invested in a Blu-Ray Player and a TV that does 1080p. After Warner Bros. moved only to Blu-Ray and HD-DVD was left in the dust I though I better get up with the times.

After much deliberation I decided to go with the Playstation 3 40GB instead of a stand alone player. Mainly because there seemed to be many issues with the early stand alone players and the PS3 can easily get firmware updates through it’s wireless capabilities.

After all said and done I’m very impressed with Blu-Ray movies. Aside from a couple, all have been a great deal better in quality of sound and video over the DVD versions. Now don’t get me wrong we aren’t talking VHS vs. DVD, but it is still it (being Blu-Ray) is quite a bit better.

So I definitely recommend adding a Blu-Ray player whenever you can afford to add it to your home theater. Here it begins now I have to start collecting Blu-Rays and slowly phase out the DVD collection. What are your Blu-Ray experiences, questions, thoughts?

Don’t stop blogging just because you’re watching too many nice movies now! ;)

a friend of mine has a blueray and the movies to look nice. I’m still stuck with a big, heavy, old tv and won’t be able to upgrade till summer. But I think the PS3 might just be the way to go, since you can actually also play games on it.

  2. on March 18th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

Definitely is an added bonus even though PS3 is not up to par in the gaming realm to something like XBOX 360, I think in time it will catch up. I’ve been very happy with it so far!

I’ve been very impressed with Sony’s Firmware updates. From how it looks so far the PS3 will definitely be future proof and it’s awesome that you can get updates over wireless internet for no cost at all.

how many movie titles are available in blueray? is there enough to buy PS3 just for movies?

  9. on March 22nd, 2008 at 11:19 pm

There are quite a few out already. I believe that there are around 500+ titles out currently but I’m not sure on the exact number.

Blue ray usage in the market is still minimal. But in time, it will conquer all.

  12. on March 26th, 2008 at 3:58 am

The PS3 should see a great surge in sales with blu-ray winning the battle with HD. The price doesn’t look so bad now especially when compared to other standalone players.

  13. on March 26th, 2008 at 10:00 am

I like blu-ray better than HD as well—I recently did a case study in one of my classes on this, pretty interesting topic.

  14. on March 26th, 2008 at 10:02 am

I think it’s kind of annoying how quickly technology keeps changing! The second I got all of my HD sorted out and done, is the second they come out with something better! Ah! Not fair :)

  15. beauty blog said,

    on March 26th, 2008 at 11:56 am

Isn’t anyone just annoyed by this? The companies expect me to accomodate THEM! So i should buy a HiDef DVD player and a Blue Ray DVD player if i want to own my movies. Or pay the premium for a player that plays both. It’s just ridiculous. Though i must say, Blu-Ray quality rocks. But still, it’s not right! 2-3 years later…some other new thing pops up and then i have to re-buy my entire collection of movies again!

  16. on March 27th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

I agree that it can be very frustrating. I have a collection of well over 300 DVDs. But I’m very pleased with the quality of Blu-Ray and with dual layer discs that equal 50 GB of space I hope that there is room to grow and that we won’t have to jump to another platform for quite some time. Also remember that PS3 and Blu-Ray players upconvert standard def DVDs to 1080p.

  19. on March 31st, 2008 at 5:47 am

Popcorn Ninja…I gotta agree with u that the PS3 is not up to par with XBOX however i think Sony has the better games…Gran Turismo is a good enough reason in itself to own a PS3…By far the best and most realistic racing game you will ever find….Thats just my opinion though…Are the GTA games on XBOX or no?

  20. Free iPhone said,

    on March 31st, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Now that blu-ray is now the market brand everyone will use it has made my choice of ps3 or xbox that much harder. I like the xbox but as microsoft have announced that they won’t make a blu-ray drive is the PS3 the better option.

    I can’t decide :-(

  21. on March 31st, 2008 at 6:53 pm

My suggestion is that you have to weigh the two sides. If you are going for mostly gaming I would have to suggest the XBOX 360 but if you are going mainly for just a Blu-Ray player then go with the PS3. The other option is wait for the stand alone Blu Players to get a little reasonable and grab one of them. Good luck with the tough decision.

  22. on April 1st, 2008 at 2:48 am

The prices will drop they always do. Not fussed about paying more for blu-ray while I can still watch dvd’s for a fraction of the price.

  23. Free iPhone said,

Good advise. As i don’t have a HD-TV yet it sways very heavily towards an xbox 360 because I wouldn’t see the benefit of blu-ray until I had a new HD-TV.

Free iPhones - I’m in exactly the same boat, until I upgrade the TV which I will not be able to afford for some time I will see no benefit so i’ll be sticking with dvd for the forseeable future.

Yes, I also bought PS3 and thats really great thing. It has really good quality and on the big screen this is awesome. Unfortunately I don’t have blu-ray films, but games goes there perfectly!!!!And I guess that I have to replace my TV. I have TV 37″ but I would have to put 50″ because I really love the quality of video.

  43. on May 1st, 2008 at 1:05 am

A problem I have with Blur-Ray is that it took ages for some older movies to come out on DVD, how long do y ou have to wait for these to appear on Blu-Ray or are you expected to continue using DVD aswell?

  44. on May 1st, 2008 at 1:41 am

    How much does blu-ray cost?

  45. on May 1st, 2008 at 1:16 pm

It depends on what you mean by cost? If you are asking just the blu-ray discs, those can range from $10 and up depending on if it’s a single disc or a collection. The average blu-ray retails from $19.99-$29.99 but if you watch Ebay or other good sales you can get them cheaper. As far as players go, those are still fairly expensive and like I was saying in the post your best bang for your buck (at least for right now) is the PS3. Which ranges from $350 up.

What you did is really smart, buying a Playstation 3 is not just buying a Blu-Ray player. But it is buying a video game too, there are many cool games coming out like Metal Gear Solid 4 and now GTA 4 is out! About the Blu Ray Movies, if you have 3000 dollars set aside you need to buy a Bravia XBR, it is the hottest LCD Out there

yea i think ur best bet for a blu-ray player is a PS3… why not have the latest game console as well as a blu ray player all in one for an excellent price? however, the bluray discs are way expensive… so i think ur best bet is to rent them, like from netflix or b-buster.

I wish Blu Ray lost. Now that it is going down the toilet, I hope it fails eventually. With the coming of faster and faster broadband, there will be no need for this ‘physical’ media. I can get the same movies and TV shows streaming and in the same HD quality as a blu ray.

It took us several years to even buy our first DVD player. I imagine it will be a while before we upgrade to Blu-Ray. 97. on June 25th, 2008 at 5:35 am

It is currently very costly now. Hope that the price comes down quickly. I had the opportunity to just see a movie in it and I have to say its truly brilliant.

  98. on June 26th, 2008 at 11:13 am

It is still very costly, but I do recommend that if you get a Blu-Ray player the best deals for movies are online - Half, EBay, Amazon, etc.

I’ve seen local stores charging regularly $29.99 - 34.99 for most movies. It’s way over priced but will soon drop (I hope).

@58 Blu-Ray is now the standard and movies will NOT be made for HD-DVD anymore.

Blu-ray is one of the best advancements in technology. Now all we need is all channels to be broadcasted in HD @ 1080p native resolution, NOT just stretching the original channels feed and call it HD like many HD Channels do.

As for everyone asking how much it cost? You’ll need an HD TV and don’t go out to the store and only buy the 1080p model cause thats what they tell you is the best. If you’re setting around 8-9ft from the set a 720p set will look the same as the 1080p set. So once you got the TV you need the blu-ray player ($400 for PS3). Yet you can get one as cheap as $330 for the Insignia player as Bestbuy but you get way more for your dollar for a PS3. Go out and do research on the net how players compare.

Ohh yeah don’t buy those really expensive monster cables. You can get HDMI cables for real cheap at amazon or monoprice.

I went and purchased a ps3 both for blu ray and the gaming, and it seem it was a wise choice considering the fall of HD DVD.

My favourite film, Baraka, is set for a Blu-Ray release in October, so it looks like I’ll be buying a new player (PS3 of course) and a new TV :)

Eventually I’ll buy a Blu-Ray player. My DVD upscales the image to 1080p already and to me it looks really good. Until it dies or Blu-Ray players become really cheap.

I just picked up my new Sony HDTV along with an awesome blu ray player. Now this is how everyone should watch a movie. The color with this blu ray player is un beatable. I have seen some HD movies and they dont come close to blue ray.

Blu Ray is the absolute best. There is no comparison even compared to HD DVD you can tell the a Blue Ray disk plays better. Take my advice and go get yourself a Blu Ray player. Like the NINJA said the PS3 is your best bet at the moment.

I have not invested in a Blu Ray system yet. I am waiting for the price to come down a bit. Besides I think I think i need to get a new HD ready television before i can really get the full affect of using Blu Ray. I am just waiting to be able to invest in a full entertainment system.

I think it is time to get a Blu-Ray player on black Friday. The prices are finally starting to be reasonable.

Kudos to Sony for including the blu ray player in it’s ps3. I’m sure the fact that they included a blu ray player in it has been a major selling point against other competitors.
