HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY Movie Review

Posted in Movie Reviews by Popcorn Ninja on the July 14th, 2008

threehalfstars-copy.jpg

Cast: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, and Doug Jones

Director: Guillermo del Toro

Here is another addition to the great year we’ve had for comic book movies (such as Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and coming soon, The Dark Knight).

Here comes a different type of super hero movie, definitely not your average comic book hero.  The films based on the Dark Horse comic have been brought to life by one of the more talented directors of our time, Guillermo del Toro.  A little back story for those that may not know much about the prequel (Hellboy) and it’s sequel - a demon, (named Hellboy by those that found him) is brought through a portal to earth.  Hellboy with his partners, Abe Sapian and Liz Sherman, go to battle against those things that go bump in the night.  This time a legendary Golden Army could be called upon to destroy mankind.

Del Toro’s imagination is truly amazing.  From his earlier films like, The Devil’s Backbone, to one of the greatest fairytale movies ever, Pan’s Labyrinth, he has brought some of the greatest visually story telling to the big screen.  Here he expands even more into the depth of the characters and the storyline.  It is much more different than the typical Marvel/DC comic book stories, which is a nice change of pace.  It is a definite must see for those looking for action and adventure.  If you liked the first Hellboy, you will not be disappointed.

I didn’t see the first one and I usually don’t get into super hero stuff, but I am amped to watch HB2 this weekend.

That’s solely because of del Toro. I watched PL on a whim, and was amazed by the movie and its direction. If Guillermo does half as good with this one, I will be happy as a clam.

    Syd!

Yes I can say the graphics are good but the story is quite bored.

This is really bad news then, because I hated the Hellboy 1. I thought that the second might be much better, looks like there will be one less movie I will have to see at the cinema. Thanx

I must say that Hellboy was a movie that I really did not get at all. I found it really odd and dis-jointed. But I have a morbid curiosity about the sequel, so I will probably see it eventually. Maybe on DVD.

  11. on July 22nd, 2008 at 6:09 am

I really think this movie should get more then 3.5 stars :\

i am sucked with my all tough internet schedule and am working hard to mange a free unplugged week so i shall be watching movies in that. I have missed so many movies including “iron man” so I am desperate to watch all of them. Of course this movie will be one of them to watch.

  16. on July 28th, 2008 at 9:10 am

I really like this one a lot. i thought the humor that Guillermo put in was fantastic. When Hellboy was blown out the window and that music started playing was a classic, I laughed for quite a while on that. It seems Del Toro does a really good job at making it seems as realistic as possible. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I watched HB1 after seeing the previews for the sequel and deciding I wanted to see it in theaters. I was pleasantly surprised by the script in HB1, which I found quite witty and generally entertaining. The action, on the other hand, was pretty weak. Unfortunately, with all the good movies coming out this summer, I haven’t gotten to HB2, but it sounds like it is much better executed than the first. Hopefully I’ll catch it before it leaves theaters.

  28. on August 6th, 2008 at 1:12 am

It’s really enjoying. Pretty hot movie. Not that typical type of movie.

  29. on August 6th, 2008 at 10:54 am

I always enjoy these type of movies, I have enough of real life as it is, so fantasy is always a nice change of pace. I loved his work with Pans Labyrinth and am very much looking forward to his contribution to the hellboy franchise, i am seeing it this weekend along with Batman, what a great combo!

I was really bored during this movie. I liked all the other superhero movies we’ve seen so far this year, but I did not like the first Hell Boy movie and this one was just as bad. But sure, you have to admire del Toro’s imagination.

I am glad to see so many other people enjoyed Hellboy as much as I did. Del Toro is a genius!

  42. on August 17th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

  49. on August 22nd, 2008 at 8:51 am

The first film was a breath of fresh air with genuine humor, great casting and a superb director with Guillermo del Toro. This sequel in my opinion really grows the story, characters and the effects are fantastic. I would actually give this move a four star, anyway good review.

  67. on September 26th, 2008 at 10:43 am

Great job on the review. I also haven’t had a chance to see this movie yet. I totally agree with Lars… Del Toro imagination runs wild in every film and turns into a masterpiece. I cant wait till i get some time to check this out.

  68. on September 26th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

i havent had a chance to watch this movie but if its anything like the other superhero movies that are out, its worth seeing. Iron man and Hulk were possibly the best movies of the year accept of course for Dark Knight. This has been one of the best years for movies at a time when you thought our economy was hurting they just keep reeling out the great films!
