My X-MEN TRILOGY Blu-Ray Review

With the upcoming release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 20th Century Fox has mastered the original X-Men trilogy on Blu-Ray.  The trilogy was released back on April 21, 2009.  This collection comes in a box with three individual cases (for each movie).  Each case includes a total of 3 discs - feature film, special features, and a digital copy disc.

The first installment of the trilogy gives a great start to the story of these super heroes.  The movie does a great job of introducing the main characters and gives most of them enough screen time for some development.  Bryan Singer (Usual Suspects) is very talented and it shows with his translation here.  With some strong performances from Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as the heads of both sides of the mutants.

The second movie, X2: X-Men United, expands on the characters and gives us better action and pacing then the original film.  Singer has made one of the best super hero movies that we have seen yet.  Much of the movie focuses on Wolverine’s past and how he became what he is today.  It also leads us into the Jean Grey/Phoenix Saga.

X-Men: The Last Stand loses some of the steam and continuity due to new direction from Brett Ratner (Rush Hour).  This is not to say that Last Stand is a bad movie, but it definitely feels different.   My main complaint is that much of the movie feels rushed.  Clocking in at only 104 minutes, it feels very compacted.  Many subplots seem to come and go, without the detail that Singer originally brought to the table.  There is still a fair amount of well-done action sequences and some closure to some of the main plot lines.

The video and audio quality are top notch on this disc.  There is a very noticeable improvement over the original DVD releases of this title.  The audio features an DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix, which provided great sound throughout, whether it was action or dialogue.

Other than a weaker third installment of a trilogy, this boxset of Blu-Rays gets my highest recommendation for overall quality of films, as well as an amazing spectacle of audio and video.

The X-men trilogy in blu ray will increase the popularity of the movie and also provides the promotion effect to the x-men new release this year.

I thought Worverine was great too but I felt it lacked something and I’m not sure what, better background music perhaps?

X1 and 2 were pro, 3 wasn’t too bad either, most Marvel films get thumbs up from me anyway.

Fans of the X-Men comics may find some of the changes to the original stories lessen the movie experience. But, if you are not a die-hard fan of the comics, the movies deliver a great cast of actors (who clearly care about the characters) in multi-threaded, intelligent stories.

I was so excited for the movie and I am not disappointed. Perhaps it is the evolution and we should be evolved and grow with the time. I love the storyline and theme.

Nice review! I’ve always been a fan of X-Men and this trilogy didn’t disappoint me. I can watch it again and again :) I agree with your thoughts on the third movie. It does have a different feel to it, and there is something to be desired for the continuity of the film plots. But that doesn’t mean that this is a bad one. It just leaves more room for the imagination I guess :) And it definitely left me hoping for a fourth, fifth, maybe even a sixth film. Thanks!

  31. on May 22nd, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Its a great movie and i have seen this movie three time. Its visual effects are very nice. This part is really very good. Thanks

After a long long wait, I have it at least and I am more than happy to watch the movie. I was expecting the same adventure and thrill. Thanks for allowing us to give a review on it.

cant see the big thing about the xmen movies none of them have been that good, origins was ok but i fealt should have been alot better. just think the xmen movies are ok at best.

  38. on June 4th, 2009 at 11:31 am

I though the last stand was quite a dissappointment as numbers 1 and 2 imo where excellent. I actually didnt know there was a change in director, so this may have been the main reason

I think X-Men 3 was the best movie of the trilogy, anyway I have recently seen Wolverine which is an average movie.

The action is non stop and the special effects jaw droping, with a scene involving San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge an incredible highlight. It is a disposable entertainment that passes the time with flickering images of flashy camera cuts and explosions before disappearing from memory before the popcorn is digested.

    What an excellent subject!

I have been an avid fan of the X-Men since i was a child following the cartoon and the comics.
With the release of the X-Men on film brought back my childhood obsession but was worried that the films may have not been good quality.

However everyone of the 3 films were fantastic and left me wanting more.
