Terminator Salvation Movie Review

Cast:  Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Common, Moon Bloodgood

Director:  McG

The next part of the Terminator saga and one of the most anticipated movies of this year has finally hit the big screen.  Terminator Salvation follows the story of John Connor (Bale) in the future this time.  Having little to do with time travel this time around, the plot is definitely a different feel for the sci-fi action series.  The problem is the difference can be both good and bad.

Director McG definitely shows that he has more up his sleeve then ever before.  The director has brought a good style to many of the action scenes, the most memorable one a scene including a helicopter.  The problem with the style is that we gain almost all action but less drama.  The previous releases in the series (especially the two done by Cameron) merged both an interesting plot, strong characters, and some of the best action scenes to hit the screen.

Christian Bale appears to be going through the steps on this one, unlike his stronger performances like Rescue Dawn and The Dark Knight.  It should be noted that newcomer Sam Worthington appears to have star power and gives hope to his future in Hollywood.

Like many other blockbusters to hit the screen of late, there is enough action to keep you entertained for a couple hours but don’t expect there to be too much to think about after you leave the theater.

*plugs his ears* i haven’t seen it yet, but it can’t be bad!!! please, don’t tell me it’s bad!!!

I have read other reviews that scored the movie low in the C range. Looks like Star Trek is the better movie for Sci Fi fans.

I cant wait to see this movie!

Ah damn. I knew this would happen if McG directed the thing. About the only good thing that he took part in is the Supernatural series, though that’s a completely different topic.

I first started to fear about this when I saw the trailer. John Connor was never trained by ninja monks or whatever, yet the stunts he pulled (most notably on his bike) were just plain silly. Plus the 50 feet high robot …

It’s sad to see a legend washed down to mediocrity. But that’s how things go with sequels I guess….

I can’t wait for it. When I can found its DVD.

I agree that Sam Worthington seem to have more star power in this movie than Christian Bale. I had my fingers crossed, hoping he wouldn’t die in the movie. Christian Bale’s acting wasn’t up to par to me. There’s this thing that he keeps doing with his voice; it’s like he can’t seem to escape the Batman character. At times, in regards to Bale’s voice, I wonder if he’s trying to go for the whole Clint Eastwood impersonation. His acting seemed forced throughout the whole movie to me.

Overall I enjoyed the movie because it paced well, had some good-looking choice of actors and actresses, had enough action and special effects, and it made you feel like you didn’t waste your money.

I’ve been looking forward to watching this movie since it was first announced that they were going to be doing another T4, but I was and am disappointed that Arnold was not in this movie :( It kinda of doesn’t feel right with out Arnold. I am going to be watching this movie this weekend, and I will try to give my personal review on the movie later in the week with another follow up comment. And no worries… I won’t give any spoilers, just like you did here in this review!

    Till then,

    Jean

PS: What were your thoughts on the movie without Arnold? Do you think it impacted the movie?

Yikes! 2 1/2 stars? Now im considering just waiting for the DVD… ahh heck, what to do… hummmm. Thanks for the heads up though, at least i won’t go into the theater expecting an awesome film!

  13. on May 28th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

Gutted! I was hoping it’d get 4 or 5 stars. I’m a massive fan of Christian Bale - really talented actor. So was expecting great thing sin this film.

I shall hold off judgement though until I see it.

  14. on May 29th, 2009 at 1:02 am

Have you seen this clip when Bale goes apes*** on the set of Terminator?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLXVuy0h29c

So if the movie sucks it must be because of poor Bruce.

  15. on May 30th, 2009 at 7:27 am

ive seen alot of critics calling this movie rubish, i hope its not i really enjoy bales performances and it would be a shame to have a talented actor in a rubish movie. cant wait to see this one my self though

I think without Arnold this movie will not be so good than last series of Terminators. I like the Arnold acting. He is much better than anyone for this movie..

  18. on June 1st, 2009 at 7:31 am

I really, really want to see Terminator Salvation with Christian Bale this Spring but I haven’t seen any of the previous “Terminator” films. I actually did not even know that there was any previous installements.

I just wanted to give an update as I promised I would after seeing the movie. To be honest, I was a big fan of the Terminator series, the first one, I loved it, as well as the second one. The third one was okay, I still enjoyed it since Arnold was in it. Still though T4 was my least favorite out of all the series *sigh* :(

    Till then,

    Jean

Very Cool site you have! I really like reading it. I think without Arnold this movie will not be so good than last series of Terminators. I like the Arnold acting. He is much stock market today better than anyone for this movie..

Thanks for review. I’ll go to see this movie today at night! Terminator series are one of the most powerfull movies in the Hollywood collection. But previous movies have a heavy bonus - it’s Arnold =)
Christian Bale is very good actor especially after Black Knight and I think that T4 will be really cool movie.

Personally I didn’t think the movie was going to be all that hot, because of everyone being so critical of it, but to be honest I liked it, and I felt it was better than I expected, and I was also far less disappointed in compared to most of my friends hehe.

I haven’t seen this movie yet, but I have heard mixed input. In general, the action and special effects were amazing, but diehard Terminator fans haven’t liked the plot as much as the first two (I disregard the third since it was devoid of much other than special effects).

I can’t even fathom in my tiny mind that a terminator movie could be bad! This is really the first review I could bring myself to read, but I haven’t quite pulled myself away from work long enough to go see it. I am looking forward to it…hopefully it’s not a big disappointment…that would suck.

you have to wonder what was up with christian bale during the filming of this movie. i agree. he was rather stale, and i liked his performance much more in the dark knight.

  30. on June 9th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

The story of the terminator is wonderful and and Arnold is a efficient man for the part of terminator he looks so impressive in the movie i like it. thanks for discussion about it.

  31. on June 10th, 2009 at 10:49 pm

I agree with your point of view that in this part of Terminator Salvation movie is lot of action and there is lack of drama. But last series were very good then this. You are nice critic. Well done.

Terminator is a nice movie with extreme machinery, latest graphics and animations.

  37. on June 18th, 2009 at 12:00 pm

The action was great but the story was missing something IMO. Better than T3 though thats for sure. There was sorta a special appearance of arnold but it wasnt really him I don’t think, just computer animation to make it look like him. Still I’m glad his face made an appearance :)

  46. on July 4th, 2009 at 2:48 am

I thought it would be pretty much as you have summised - more action but less real plot than the previous. It is very strange to have a terminator film without Arnie so I didn’t bother seeing this at the cinema but will probably get it out one rainy day on DVD.

As a kid, I had always been a terminator fan. So, I was quite ambivalent with the new terminator film that they’re making. Ambivalent, because I was excited, at the same time half-hearted because maybe the new film will not be as great as the previous ones. But your right, the director Director McG, really placed a nice twist on this one. The scenes were breath-taking and awesome! However, like all other action-packed films, expectations on depth should be pretty low. :)

Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan of it. I like it better than T3, but not as much as T1 or T2. I think the terminators were very well done, especially the gigantic one they encounter at the gas station and the CGI Arnold. But it didn’t really feel like a Terminator movie

I watched this movie while home from work sick recently. I hadn’t been able to convince my girlfriend to watch this one. So it was one of the few chances. Unfortunately I didn’t catch the end of the movie as I fell asleep. Other than that it was an alright movie.
