X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE Movie Review

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston
Director: Gavin Hood
I’m a big fan of the first two X-Men films. The Last Stand, third installment in the original trilogy, had some good action and a majority of the cast back, but it lacked what the first two movies had. I’ve said it and I’ll say it again, movies just try to hard and incorporate too much action/special effects, but forget about the human aspect of movies.
Unfortunately, Wolverine is a similar type of movie. The film will answer all the questions about Logan aka Wolverine, but that to me is the downfall of the movie. By trying to answer every single question in a 107 minute film, you crunch too much into it. While trying to tell this story you still have to have a large amount of action. The final result ends in a movie that is thrown together with a rushed feeling.
Where the Singer X-Men movies seemed to soar, this movie seems to fail. The one positive about the movie is that Jackman does appear to be giving it his all and he does fit the role of Wolverine. Unfortunately, with all his talent he could not save this one from being an average comic book movie.

Still i hven’t seen wolverine but X- men was really a great movie i like the action and spacial effect of the movie. but i agree with your point that there were lack of human aspect. Nice talking. Thanks
on May 31st, 2009 at 11:55 pm
You are right the first two part of X-men movie was really wonderful. Every character of those movie had different spacial power which was i like. But its not good that Wolverine is similar of that.
on June 1st, 2009 at 7:28 am
Its was a great movie full of action…My only complaint was why they made weapon XI deadpool cause it didn’t happen like that and he never was weapon XI!!!
on June 1st, 2009 at 1:19 pm
I haven’t seen the movie but did hear the same complaint as AO “weapon X” Pretty stupid!
on June 1st, 2009 at 9:27 pm
saw the movie and i thought it was pretty good for what it was, i wish they would have done more with deadpool
on June 1st, 2009 at 10:07 pm
I haven’t had the chance to see the movie too, there’s just too much things to do. But I promised myself I’d watch it since I really enjoyed the previous X-men films. I’ve heard other reviews too saying that the movie wasn’t that good. I’m sure it’ll still be interesting to watch, looking forward to it! Thanks for the review!
on June 1st, 2009 at 10:29 pm
I like all X-man movies all of these are very good I am big fan or X-man.
on June 1st, 2009 at 11:12 pm
yea you’re right. The two part of X-men movie was really great. Full of actions and the effects are amazing. I have missed the Wolverine part but my sister told me that it was also great but not that similar to the latter.
on June 2nd, 2009 at 3:53 am
Just saw the last part, kind of boring in my opinion.
on June 2nd, 2009 at 12:38 pm
I saw it and I enjoyed it so much, I’d like to know all the x men histories, I hope we will have one movie per character.
on June 3rd, 2009 at 12:54 am
I am very happy to know that I am not alone fan or X-man. There are a lot like me. I hope every had enjoyed these movies very much.
on June 3rd, 2009 at 7:22 am
I actually though the movie was well done…acting wise. Storyline was abit off from the comic but we can allow that. I would have given 3.5 outa 5
on June 3rd, 2009 at 8:29 am
I love X-men
on June 3rd, 2009 at 10:54 am
Thanks for the review. I am not big fan of the x-men, but i will spare some time to watch this new episode.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, though the review looks amazing ! Thanks for the post.
Cheers !
on June 3rd, 2009 at 1:18 pm
hugh jackman is naked!!!
on June 3rd, 2009 at 9:49 pm
I saw it in last weekend. I think that this part is not so interesting that previous, there are many predictable moments and straight story. But the visual effects are really cool =) This movie is need to see in cinema only and unfortunately one-time-to-see movie.
on June 4th, 2009 at 3:14 am
After this review, I’ll defo be checking the film out to make my mind up.
on June 4th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
I saw the movie when it first came out. As a big fan of first two X-Men movies, I was hopping this one would be as great as first two. However, I still feel the movie is missing something. I like the first part of the movie. I was expecting the movie can have more story about Wade Wilson
on June 4th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Well I was looking forward to seeing this movie, but after this review, maybe not. As someone who never really got into comic books I hold a certain prejudice against the superhero movies of the last several years. Most of them were subpar but did well based on the comicbook character’s popularity. Wolverine is one character that I liked. So it is a shame to hear they rushed the movie about him.
on June 5th, 2009 at 3:10 am
It wasn’t that bad. Just could’ve been better. I still enjoyed it, I’d rate it 3/5.
on June 5th, 2009 at 5:20 am
Hugh Jackman is the most wonderful man on this planet and I like all his movies. I really like X-Men series.
on June 5th, 2009 at 8:54 am
When the movie finished I thought I was only in the middle of it.
on June 5th, 2009 at 11:06 am
I agree - the first two X-Men films were excellent, but after Singer left, the franchise nosedived. Singer had the prerequisite passion to do a comic book film, and when he left, that passion seemed like it disappeared.
The third X-Men film was all about action and combat, rather than the development of character relationships, which is the ABSOLUTE CORE of any hero/villain. Their characters are representations of ourselves as imagined by their creator, and their powers are offshoots of their attributes.
Wolverine was more of the same. On the opposite side, the video game received very strong reviews and high praise, so at least that aspect improved, right?
on June 7th, 2009 at 11:15 am
I couldn’t agree more. Too much action and not nearly enough character and plot development. Now I loves me some Hugh Jackman but he can’t carry the movie by himself.
on June 7th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
X men is a nice movie. worth to watch
on June 8th, 2009 at 9:20 am
I have only seen an unfinished copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I have to say I really enjoyed it. Despite have no special effects and seeing wires hanging during intense action scenes I thought the story was really good. One thing I was confused about however was Deadpoole’s character. I do not remember him having as many powers as they gave him in the movie.
on June 8th, 2009 at 10:15 am
I agree with you. It was pretty rushed. There was just way too much to cover and they should have just chosen not to do all of it. Still, I really enjoyed the movie. It was a fun one to watch even if it wasn’t the best film ever.
on June 8th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
I loved this movie!!!!!
on June 8th, 2009 at 9:24 pm

I still have not seen this movie, I need to get on it and see what all the fuss is about.
on June 9th, 2009 at 3:44 am
Watching X men is better than sex
on June 9th, 2009 at 10:39 am
like most sequels, they don’t measure up to their predecessors. i was dissapointed.
on June 9th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
Wolverine isn’t Bad, but it’s not as good as it could have been. I think the writing was sub-par. The actors did well with what they had, sure but the script was just all over the place … I really couldn’t enjoy the movie as much as I thought I would.
Till then,
Jean

loved this film can’t wait for the DVD with all the endings on
on June 11th, 2009 at 2:34 am
Great Review! Really what a move it is? and the acting of Jackman is like anything.
on June 11th, 2009 at 6:37 am
I saw the working print, before much of the 3d special effects had been added. I was sort of underwhelmed by the whole plot line. I agree with you though, Jackman was truly invested in his role. Unfortunately the story fell short.
on June 11th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
@ Adam Alfia X-man movies are very fine and excellent. I had watch all these, all are very good and i like these very much. you have very nice review of these movies.
on June 12th, 2009 at 12:51 am
X-men is cool
on June 12th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Wolverine without the X-MEN team. I don’t know. Was it really worth the watch?
on June 12th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
The opening sequence of X2 (the white house scene) remains one of my all-time favorite action sequences of all time.
Besides being wonderfully choreographed (which it obviously was) the scene really showed what kind of an advantage a mutant — even a “less powerful” one like Nightcrawler — has over ordinary humans, even soldiers. The infiltration that that one mutant was able to accomplish, as well as how badly he out-fought the soldiers and how close he got to the president, really went a long way in storytelling… Why are the humans SO afraid of the mutants.
I think THAT might be what was missing in Wolverine based on your reservations… This sense of mystery, choreography, and wonder. Sure cool action sequences and fights are cool action sequences and fights (and we all loved Frasier gettin’ down as Beast in X3)… and we all know how lacking that was (and Wolverine seems to be) relative to X2.
Thanks for posting this.

I do not watch the movie but I heard of this praise and criticism, and I will see the film soon.
on June 15th, 2009 at 5:58 am
I was watching Wolverine when in WorkPrint version, and there wasn’t any vissual effects, just ropes behind the actors and 3d models when something huge was happening! Now that was fun!!
on June 15th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
you don’t even feel the time of the movie because you’re so inthrauled with everything that’s going on. time flew while i had fun.

Amazing movie review. I wish I can watch this movie anytime soon.
on June 17th, 2009 at 2:50 am
Hmmm… the movie was pretty sucky. Lots of homo-erotic love going on…. although I thought the Xbox game spinoff was not bad… did you try it? Pretty much an ordinary run and slash but it had its fun moments!
on June 18th, 2009 at 2:22 am

on June 19th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
I think I read the same review about the movie on Yahoo. By that I mean the reviewer also said that there is too much CGI and action.
I wasn’t able to watch the movie though, sadly. I totally missed-out on all the Jackman goodness!
on June 20th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
I didnt think it was that great but I liked Ryan renolds as Deadpool, I hope they go forward with the deadpool movie.
on June 21st, 2009 at 1:27 am
Definitely have to agree with you on this one. The first two movies were decent, but Origins just seemed like so much hack and slash and not really enough plot development. I never really felt drawn into the characters or the story. It was more like, “hey those are cool effects… kinda”
on June 22nd, 2009 at 4:26 am
I kinda liked this movie. It was entertaining. Sure it was full of plotholes but whatever, I’m not looking for intelectual stimuli in movies like that.
on June 22nd, 2009 at 2:56 pm
i’ve watched this film twice now, and it’s a great addition to the x-men franchise.
on June 22nd, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I didnt realle like it compared to the previous :/

Real cool movie. Too many fantastic scenes but its not bad. Thanks for review!
on June 23rd, 2009 at 2:44 pm
I’ve heard a lot of bad reviews about the film, these have put me off. So I got to thinking, what if everyone else thought like me? Then I realised that people who had actually seen the films said it was bad too. I will watch it soon…
on June 23rd, 2009 at 6:18 pm
I loved it….just saw it.
on June 23rd, 2009 at 10:26 pm
while the film does feature plenty of action and special effects, it doesn’t come close to being anywhere as good as either of the first two films in the X-Men franchise.
on June 24th, 2009 at 1:35 am
Very nice post thanks.
on June 24th, 2009 at 3:27 am

on June 26th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is a good movie with lots of special effects, but my favorite is still X-MEN 1. I don’t know why, but when it comes to trilogies I always like more the first movie.

on June 30th, 2009 at 1:35 am
I’ma also a fan of X-man series. I found Wolverine a bit dissapointing though. I think that casting Hugh Jackman was the best choice and his role was one of the best features in the film. He’s one of my favorite actors and I’d say that nothing comares to him.
on June 30th, 2009 at 11:48 pm
Leading up to the events of “X-Men,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” so does that mean its before he meets the xmen? cuz sabertooth is in it.. and i thought he didnt know him in xmen? but still the movie is gonna be super cool

I’m lucky to see this movie for free. I traveled for 6 hours in a commuter bus and luckily one of the featured movies is Wolverine. Honestly, I know that the copy was pirated… Too bad! But I love the movie. It’s Wolverine I’m really raving for in XMEN

I like this movie but i think that put Leonidas like Logan´s brother was too wrong. Therefore, they waste such a good character like deadpool/wade wilson .
I am agree with this part:
“The one positive about the movie is that Jackman does appear to be giving it his all and he does fit the role of Wolverine. Unfortunately, with all his talent he could not save this one from being an average comic book movie.”

Any Hugh Jackman movie is a joy to watch. Perhaps not his strongest work, but he’s great nonetheless!
on July 23rd, 2009 at 12:30 pm
I’ve still not seen Wolverine, most of my friends who have seen it, said it was a bit of a let down, so I might as watch it on DVD, that way I won’t be wasting too much money if I don’t like it…
on July 24th, 2009 at 2:21 am
Awesome trailer!! tq
on July 24th, 2009 at 2:34 am
And it all could be so good… But the movie is so crappy. They could use the original Weapon X comics to show people real Wolverine emotions and the suffering while the medical examinations and getting his enormous abilities. The movie is flat and shallow, made only to show some effects and bring back money. I was very dissapointed with it.
on July 25th, 2009 at 12:19 am
I loved Hugh Jackman in this movie, and I also have to say the character of Gambit was great eye candy as well, even though he was missing the accent, I didn’t so much mind.thanks.

It such a long time to see you again in post how long will you take to publish your new post. l look forward about that.
on July 26th, 2009 at 12:35 am
I think that Jackman did an excellent job and he took on the whole movie on his shoulders, since the rest of the cast did not manage to measure up to his standards. Now I want them to call up Halle Berry and make X-men Origins: Storm!
on July 26th, 2009 at 2:49 am
This move was the ish! I watched the leaked R5 screener copy with the half finished special effects, very cool stuff.
I can’t wait for it to come out on DVD so I can check it out. Very excited..
I enjoyed your reviews, thanks for your thoughts on the movie! Cheers!

I’m not sure why people are totally dissing this movie. Was it as good as all the X-Men movies? No. However, I thought it was still entertaining with lots of funny moments. Jackman’s charisma still comes through and I thought the characters (although not completely in line with Marvel), were still interesting.

Sad to admit, I first saw a bootleg version of this movie and really liked it, but of course, the special effects weren’t done. I really want to see it again in all of it’s glory!
on August 3rd, 2009 at 1:33 pm
I liked it, but it drag out a tad too long.
on August 4th, 2009 at 5:07 am
I took my girlfriend to see Wolverine, normally she hates this kind of movie and hadn’t see any x-men stuff at all, but she loved it. It actually convinced her to watch the first x-men which i had on DVD. It works quite well as she is actually seeing the series in the proper sequence- Wolverine, x-men 1, 2 etc.
I’m a bit jealous!
on August 4th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Great movie!
on August 5th, 2009 at 8:16 am
hi i seen this film i thought that it wasn’t as good as the other x-men films but i thought that it was still a great film and great review keep up the good work
on August 5th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Hi,
This Prequel of the X-Mes series truly the best of the lot. I enjoyed a lot
on August 5th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Lots of action and Jackman is in great shape but the movie is just more of the same. I was definitely disappointed.
on August 5th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Very Nice Movie I Watched This Movie

Great movie!

X-Men Origins; wolverine Great Movie. I like it! Two Thumbs Up!!!
on August 8th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
I think I understand what you are saying. The sense of mystery just isn’t there. If it would have been a more darker style kind of movie it would have been better.
on August 8th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
i love this movie!

on August 11th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
He has more power to tell people what to do (he was above the editor) that’s like your boss telling you to do something and regardless if he is wrong or rite, you do it but the out come is that downloading movies is illegal especially if the movie has not been released yet !
on August 11th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
LOL X3 is such a low bar that anything would be better than it
so… 10 * 0 is still 0thanks.
on August 12th, 2009 at 11:59 am
thank you very much for sharing buddy…i had seen the movie its really awesome
on August 12th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Well, the good news for everyone who liked this movie is that Hugh Jackman is already talking about the sequel. Supposedly the storyline will stick pretty closely to the comics from the eighties, with Wolverine hanging out with ninjas and all that. Not too many details yet, I’m sure more to come.
on August 12th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
I thought it was still entertaining with lots of funny moments. Jackman’s charisma still comes through and I thought the characters , were still interesting.

so remember when watching movies x-men in the children …
on August 14th, 2009 at 8:26 am
I hated this movie and I am almost done with this type of movie. We have be hit hard with too many super hero movies. Slow down and make good a good one once in a while, not make 10 per year with most being crap!
Let’s hear your next review.
on August 15th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
i am agree with your review, but i think it still entertaining and not that bad. Maybe Hollywood still want to play more with the effect in the movie. Just like GI Joe.
on August 16th, 2009 at 11:41 pm
these photos are pretty nice
on August 17th, 2009 at 4:00 am
it was actually a decent movie , but i felt that somehow it missed something
and the end was really bad
but , hey , it’s still an xmen movie :p
on August 17th, 2009 at 9:12 am
WOLVERINE is my lovee..really i like to wolverine, he’s very strong and charisma.
on August 17th, 2009 at 10:58 am
I am stuck on the New Orleans level of X Men Origins for the PS2.
I do what it says and press square to kick the control panel, but nothing happens. There are some other controls just around the corner that Wolverine looks at and talks about as he walks past them, but I can’t figure out how to use them!
on August 17th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
thanks very nice web site..

on August 18th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Loved the orginal X-Men films, not sure this one will quite match up but I’ll give it a chance!
on August 19th, 2009 at 4:54 am
I was there only to see Hugh in his leather jacket one more time. The whole movie was a little bit dumb, and a lot of mistakes I’ve seen, and I watched the movie only once :o. I must say that I predicted something much worse, but what they did is far from perfection. Maybe next time will be better.
on August 19th, 2009 at 4:59 am

on August 19th, 2009 at 5:17 am
This movie was also another action movie. Great love scene however, the story of wolverine has a lot of things cut out of it that was not mentioned making the movie somewhat hard to understand, especially if you are an x-men comic book fan.
on August 19th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
I love XMen. It’s a big shame that i wasn’t able to watch on the big screen. Thanks for the review, now i’m excited to watch it on my new LCD TV in all blu-ray glory.haha I better prepare some popcorn too.
on August 19th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Good day to you! I agree with your first point that the first two films are way better compared to this last x-men film. In terms of the creativity, artistry, production and story line, the first two films really are on a level higher. Truly, this last film, as what you’ve said is average living you with the feeling that it seemed to be “rushed.” The writers could have been more prudent in trying to synthesized logan’s life.
on August 20th, 2009 at 6:55 am
They could use the original Weapon X comics to show people real Wolverine emotions and the suffering while the medical examinations and getting his enormous abilities.
on August 20th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
The tough part was reconciling some of the hastier elements of the film.we forgive movies that don’t answer everything purposefully. We call them “plot holes” when the movie does try to justify itself and leaves gaps. Like gambit, for instance. Where the hell did he come from? What was Agent 0’s schtick1? What the hell were the writers thinking with deadpool?!?!
The next one, based on Frank Miller’s run on wolverine, should be better, i hope.
on August 20th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Where are you its very long time you have not update your blog. we are looking forward to you. I hope you will be all right and come back soon.

on August 27th, 2009 at 3:11 am
I am not a big fan of the X-Men series but I just heard the story from my room mate. I got an oppurtunity to watch this movie. It was an amazing movie and thought to put some reviews. I do not know how do these hollywood people get all the innovations and creativity to create such movies.
on August 27th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Awesome! It is really amazing movie I have seen a several time. Thanks for sharing and I once again review. I don’t forget it.
on August 28th, 2009 at 9:45 am
So sad to hear that this wasn’t a good movie. Setting aside what you said about the action factor, I also think that movies work too hard at being cliche, or “movie-like”.
on August 28th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
I thinks X-men is the best movie in the world after 80s , I am fan of these movies , please wirght more about x-men movies
thank you

This is make for me !! i am a big fan of “x-man ” Thank you
on September 2nd, 2009 at 3:58 am
I love the X MEN series, the movement concept I mind blowing. WOLVERINE (Logan) is one of my favorite characters. Most appealing factor about his character is its uncertain nature. The only certainty in his life is “Uncertainty”.
on September 3rd, 2009 at 10:27 pm
It was an amazing movie and thought to put some reviews. I do not know how do these hollywood people get all the innovations and creativity to create such movies.
on September 8th, 2009 at 12:31 am
Hey friends! That is one of my favorite series. I like to watch it again and again. I don’t know how these Hollywood people get creative and innovative ideas to explain and express in their movies. They are true artists. But I feel that the last two parts were better than this new one. By the way, I thank you for this writing buddy. Keep on writing friend….
on September 8th, 2009 at 8:24 am
I watched the movie only once :o. I must say that I predicted something much worse, but what they did is far from perfection. Maybe next time will be better.
on September 9th, 2009 at 11:21 am
I really liked the first 2 movies, the third was OK, but all the bad press on this one, I have no desire whatsoever to check it out… Wish the rights would revert back to Marvel before they screw it up further.
on September 15th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Great movie with wicked special fx!
on September 17th, 2009 at 12:49 am
I must see it. And tham I will write what I am thinking about it.
on September 21st, 2009 at 7:21 am
Hello All,
I watched this movie with a few hardcore comic book readers and they were able to spot quite a few mistakes. I really enjoyed the movie. The effects and action were consistently impressive and I enjoyed learning about each character. Does anyone know when the next X-Men movie will be? Can’t wait!
on September 22nd, 2009 at 8:16 am
i really enjoy the for movies but personality i prefer the third, because there is more action than the others.
on September 23rd, 2009 at 8:45 am

Nice and impressive picture High jackman is a legend, not the best x-men film but still enjoyed
on October 7th, 2009 at 11:49 am
I really enjoyed the movie, I like the history of how these superheroes became superheroes. Movies on the Origin of superheroes should be there individually…..
on October 7th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
This is a great movie. I watched it twice, the screener ver and the HD ver. I never get bored to see Wolverine in action. One of my fav heroes in Marvel world. Hope it makes it to the sequel.
on October 8th, 2009 at 11:28 am
Hugh Jackman is so good in everything he does. I didn’t think the movie was as bad as many other people, especially comic book fans did.
It’s not as good as X-men 1 and 2, but scads better than 3, which was horrible.
I enjoyed it a great deal, as just a loud, fun, fast ride with a guy a really like. I think it definitely succeeded on that level for many people.
I wish they’d hurry up with Origins: Magneto.
on October 11th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Hugh Jackman is awsome, what an amazing actor

I like all X-man movies all of these are very good I am big fan or X-man. Great movie.
on November 3rd, 2009 at 9:12 pm
It differs greatly, everyone it kills off is still alive in the comics, none of the mutants kidnapped were actually kidnapped, Deadpools has everyones powers, in the comics he just has a healing factor and uses a device to teleport, the Blobs power is super-strength and invulnerability, in the comics his weight.
on November 28th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Hey Popcorn Ninja, This is cool…I remember that movies. I should watch it one more time . Thanks for sharing this with us.
on December 2nd, 2009 at 8:25 am
Ninja I have to agree with you on Wolverine..I had high expectations..and well the movie pretty much didn’t live up to any of ‘em…as you said from teh beginning of the movie I just the feeling like they shot the movie thinking…ok so let’s get this boring introduction part about his life over with…pump it up with all the details and let the story part end in the 1st movie so we van pump up the sequel with even more special effects and fights..no don’t get me wrong I didn’t hate it nor did I hate The Last Stand…I enjoyed wathing them …cause I am a total sci-fi junky…but I excpetced a lot more..but on the bright side I read somewhere that Singer agreed to make a second X-Men trilogy..now I am not sure where the event’s will be put in the storyline..after or before the 1st trilogy..but I just can’t wait to see what Bryan will do..
on December 3rd, 2009 at 2:40 pm
This movie was horrid. I could only watch it one time. The second time it was turned off after a few minutes.
